Fact file

Project: Earth Pavillion, Genesis Project, Taunton
Location: Urban
Construction brief: Construct two of the three different types of earth walls used in the building. Demonstrate how the materials can be used within a mainstream, modern brief.
Duration: Five weeks total
Special considerations: This project was on view from the public throughout the duration and was of great interest to many construction professionals so everything had to be right. The construction had to be very accurate to enable the massively heavy roof to sit firmly and squarely on each of the walls. As the inner surfaces were to remain on show the finishes also had to be perfect.

Project case notes:

Materials from site were used as much as possible to reduce the impact of the building and show that it was possible.

The space within which to work was tight, especially for mixing the cob but also once the deliveries of cob blocks and mortar had been made.

It was a great experience to successfully work on such a large project with so many other contractors.
