Fact file

Project: Farmhouse, Copplestone
Location: Rural
Construction brief: Remove failing and inappropriate cement render from exterior and replace with a smooth lime render.
Duration: Eight weeks total.
Special considerations: Parts of this very large farmhouse had already been re-rendered with a lime putty render which had already begun to fail due to driving rain and frost. The building was a mixture of cob and stone, the cob being generally in a very poor state and badly eroded. The new render had to be very robust as it received heavy weathering.

Project case notes:

The render applied was a weakly hydraulic render to make it more robust than straight lime putty and also to help fill out the deep pits in the cob.

The spray application once again proved very useful due to the enormous size of this building, 18 tonnes of render was applied over the 250m² of cob and stone walling which would have been extremely laborious and slow by hand.
